What’s That Smell?!

Today we are looking at Loveone’s range of candles from True Grace. If you want a  fragranced candle which provides ‘An essence of England’ then True Grace is the range for you.  Read on for ‘Thoughts from Cathy’ and the results from our Fragrance Panel!

True Grace candles

Thoughts from Cathy: Fragrance or smells are all around us – they can evoke a mood, a feeling, a reaction, even take you back to a place, remind you of a memory or generate a sense of well being.

What’s your favourite or what turns your stomach? Its all so personal. At extremes I love the smell of new books and bookshops but also petrol and fresh coffee! So to select a range of candles for the shop was quite a challenge! I first met the talented candlemakers at True Grace six years ago. Based in Wiltshire, their ethos is “as it should be”. They have captured the essence of the English countryside through their product collections:

The Village – beautiful, honest and memorable The Manor – luxurious, unexpected and complex Walled Garden – flowers, herbs and glasshouses

At Loveone we currently sell 15 different fragrances from florals to vegetables. There are many more in the range – but I’m not sure yet about bonfire as a fragrance!

The newest fragrance to grace our shelves is Black Lily. This new candle evokes a garden at night – an exotic blend of violets, jasmine, lily and vanilla refreshed by bergamot, vetiver and sandalwood.

Within the True Grace range we stock candles in both tins and glass containers, diffusers, scented leaves and hand washes/creams. All are made with the finest ingredients and natural waxes. The pretty glass candle containers are etched and can be reused.

This range is a perfect source of gifts for many occasions especially Mothers Day and Birthdays.

Fragrance Panel Results This week we thought we’d try something a bit different by getting some Loveone friends together to really put the True Grace fragrances to the test.  So our “expert” panel of Alex, Annie, Lindsey, Nicola and myself met at Cathy’s with our noses finely tuned and raring to go! Laid out on the dining room table, Cathy had placed 16 candles (she had sneakily thrown us a red herring by putting in 2 of the same!) . The names of the candles were covered up, and question sheets were at the ready. The panel then went along the line, sniffed each candle and wrote down what they believed the fragrance to be.  Sniffing 16 candles in quick succession was quite overwhelming for the nasal sense buds. But each one had a really distinctive smell – some stronger than others.  Some we thought were better for certain seasons and some we thought were more female or male suited.

Annie

Overall we did quite well and we certainly guessed or were very close to a fair few. Some we only got when Cathy told us the answer and we smelt them again. But we all agreed with Cathy’s words above – that likes and dislikes are so personal and really vary from person to person.

Our favourites – 2 Votes for Stem Ginger, 1 Vote for Hyacinth, 1 Vote for Orchard and 1 Vote for Wild Mint Our least favourites – 3 Votes for Cucumber, 1 Vote for Fig and 1 Vote for Moroccan Rose (even though this is one of our best sellers!)

A big thank you to our superb panel – it certainly was a different and enjoyable Monday afternoon. There definitely were a few ‘ooh I must buy that one’ !

Curious County

32_St_Peters_St_Alex_PotterMorning Readers, Hope this Monday finds you bright and cheery? Today we thought we’d look at the newly launched Visit Suffolk campaign which labels Suffolk as a ‘Curious County’.

Launched primarily as a social media campaign, it is designed to attract visitors to Suffolk from London, the Midlands and Cambridge. By looking at the website  www.thecuriouscounty.com or their facebook or twitter page – you will see that the campaign is not designed to be traditional in any sense! It uses quirky illustrated characters with names such as Roger Frobisher and Ruby Hegarty to appeal to different visitor groups. These characters are then ‘photographed’ at different Suffolk gems which potential visitors can view online. However it is the controversy over the word ‘Curious’ which has really raised its profile – the campaign has even gained national coverage over the debate. But the controversy is great for the campaign as it meant they have had a staggering 200,000 hits on Twitter. It certainly has piqued people’s interest and if that draws visitors into Suffolk then great!

Is Suffolk curious? Well we certainly have lots to offer tourists – read on for Cathy’s views and in particular her suggestions about what is so great about Suffolk’s Hometown: Ipswich.

Thoughts from Cathy:

Personally I’m not sure about the word “Curious”, I like the idea of being curious and inspiring people to look a bit deeper and further but for me curious can also conjure up oddness, slightly weird associations. However I hope the campaign will inspire and encourage visitors and residents alike to go out and visit Suffolk. In the spirit of this I wanted to  be a little bit more curious about Ipswich – the place where I live and work. In particular how would I sell Ipswich to the visitor and its residents.

Here’s a few suggestions:

The Waterfront – a beautiful mix of old and new. Its celebrates our Maritime heritage and also reflects a new cosmopolitan feel to the town. I had a friend visit last year from New Zealand who hadn’t been in town for at least 15 years and said the Waterfront reminded him of home….Auckland. That’s praise indeed!

43_Uni_waterfront_Alex_Potter

Vintage walking Map – The joining up  and celebration of the quirkier side of independent shopping in Ipswich. Watch out for further blogs on this!

IpArt Festival – Our annual Arts festival held in June/July is an amazing celebration of art and culture and attracts large numbers of visitors. It includes a Music Day, Opera and Proms in the Park, Vintage and Craft Market on St Peters Street, Comedy, poetry and dance.

Magnificent parks – Ipswich is blessed with several beautiful parks. My favourite is Christchurch Park and I am lucky enough to walk through it most days. It is a home to the beautiful Christchurch Mansion – there is plenty to be curious about in this building!

Amazing Architecture – We have it all…..Tudor, Georgian, Victorian and Modern. Just go for a wander and look up!!! In summary, my thoughts are Suffolk is a beautiful county but it is so much more than seaside and country. It has an edgy, gritty, artistic, culturally diverse and interesting county town waiting to be given another chance.

A Blogging We Will Go …..

Hello, we are so excited here at Loveone to be starting February with a new Blog.

For those of you who haven’t visited us yet – we pride ourselves on being the smallest department store in Ipswich. Located in St Peter’s Street, we sell a wide range of gifts from jewellery, candles, toys, prints, cushions, cards to bath products.

Window Hello PushkinIMG_2486[1]

We primarily stock products which are designed and made in Britain. We are the only shop in town to stock recognisable British brands such as; Jellycat, Cowshed, Ham and True Grace. But we also offer products from the many talented designers and makers which the region has to offer, such as Jess Broad (Hello Pushkin) and Victoria Hall (Cluck Cluck). Loveone’s owner Cathy Frost, is regularly up in London searching out new designers or meeting with local Suffolk talent to ensure stock is kept fresh .

Residing within Loveone we also have:

Betty Blue Hat – sellers of all manner of retro and vintage homeware (upstairs)

Jenny Wren Yarns – the place to stop for anything knitting or crochet related (downstairs back)

We are deceptively larger than we look from the outside!

The aim is to use the Blog to keep you updated with the latest shop news, such as new products, designers and gift ideas. But also to update you on local issues and projects which Cathy and Loveone are passionate about, such as the St Peter’s Street markets which are organised jointly with ‘I Make Fun Stuff’, showcasing artists at Gallery one and doing our bit to support the high street to name but a few! We have so many things we want to talk about … you may not be able to get us to stop :-)

BTW – only 14 days until Valentines Day and we have just got the most amazing new jewellery in:
