What’s That Smell?!

Today we are looking at Loveone’s range of candles from True Grace. If you want a  fragranced candle which provides ‘An essence of England’ then True Grace is the range for you.  Read on for ‘Thoughts from Cathy’ and the results from our Fragrance Panel!

True Grace candles

Thoughts from Cathy:
Fragrance or smells are all around us – they can evoke a mood, a feeling, a reaction, even take you back to a place, remind you of a memory or generate a sense of well being.

What’s your favourite or what turns your stomach? Its all so personal. At extremes I love the smell of new books and bookshops but also petrol and fresh coffee! So to select a range of candles for the shop was quite a challenge! I first met the talented candlemakers at True Grace six years ago. Based in Wiltshire, their ethos is “as it should be”. They have captured the essence of the English countryside through their product collections:

The Village – beautiful, honest and memorable
The Manor – luxurious, unexpected and complex
Walled Garden – flowers, herbs and glasshouses

At Loveone we currently sell 15 different fragrances from florals to vegetables. There are many more in the range – but I’m not sure yet about bonfire as a fragrance!

The newest fragrance to grace our shelves is Black Lily. This new candle evokes a garden at night – an exotic blend of violets, jasmine, lily and vanilla refreshed by bergamot, vetiver and sandalwood.

Within the True Grace range we stock candles in both tins and glass containers, diffusers, scented leaves and hand washes/creams. All are made with the finest ingredients and natural waxes. The pretty glass candle containers are etched and can be reused.

This range is a perfect source of gifts for many occasions especially Mothers Day and Birthdays.

Fragrance Panel Results
This week we thought we’d try something a bit different by getting some Loveone friends together to really put the True Grace fragrances to the test.  So our “expert” panel of Alex, Annie, Lindsey, Nicola and myself met at Cathy’s with our noses finely tuned and raring to go! Laid out on the dining room table, Cathy had placed 16 candles (she had sneakily thrown us a red herring by putting in 2 of the same!) . The names of the candles were covered up, and question sheets were at the ready. The panel then went along the line, sniffed each candle and wrote down what they believed the fragrance to be.  Sniffing 16 candles in quick succession was quite overwhelming for the nasal sense buds. But each one had a really distinctive smell – some stronger than others.  Some we thought were better for certain seasons and some we thought were more female or male suited.

Overall we did quite well and we certainly guessed or were very close to a fair few. Some we only got when Cathy told us the answer and we smelt them again. But we all agreed with Cathy’s words above – that likes and dislikes are so personal and really vary from person to person.

Our favourites – 2 Votes for Stem Ginger, 1 Vote for Hyacinth, 1 Vote for Orchard and 1 Vote for Wild Mint
Our least favourites – 3 Votes for Cucumber, 1 Vote for Fig and 1 Vote for Moroccan Rose (even though this is one of our best sellers!)

A big thank you to our superb panel – it certainly was a different and enjoyable Monday afternoon. There definitely were a few ‘ooh I must buy that one’ !
